Ever hear the expression, “that person’s famous for being famous”? The Mavic Open Sport rim is popular because it’s popular. It’s a known quantity in a world diluted with over-hyped bicycle rims. The Open Sport doesn’t claim to make you more “aero” because 2mm on a rim profile is really going to make a difference when you’ve got a 12 kt headwind, or offer “noticeably” more comfort because its 2mm wider from the rim’s centerline. The Mavic Open Sport offers an old school box styled rim; and in this case, that’s a good thing. We don’t need to take a bunch of time comparing this rim to another, there’s not too many box styled rims anymore. The few we’ve seen are noodles under tension or have junk sidewall tolerances such that they’re impossible to true under three tenths of a millimeter. In summary, the Open Sport sells itself. This rim works, it’s a great rim without pretension.
We are building these Mavic Open Sport rims up with 32 hole, Shimano Claris 2400 series (8/9/10 spd) or Tiagra 4600 series (8/9/10 spd), or BWW RT (Road/Train 8/9/10 spd ) hubs, laced three cross front and rear, using DT Swiss stainless silver stainless 2.0mm/14g spokes and brass nipples. This lace pattern offers excellent lateral strength while still allowing each wheel to absorb a fair amount of road vibration. Both Shimano hub set options feature a loose ball bearing, cup and cone mechanism, and weigh about 500 - 510g for the hub set. The BWW RT hub set features sealed cartridge bearings, and weighs about 420g. All hub options have an aluminum hub shell, steel axles, and steel freehubs, that will resist cassette bite and hold up for a super long time. Wheel set weights will vary based on hub selection, but approximate:
with 2400's - 2075g (set)
with 4600's - 2060g (set)
with RT's - 1985g (set)
Thanks for taking a moment to check out these wheels.
