Even in the world of supposed bicycle wheel building aficionados, the Mavic CXP33 is a very special, very misunderstood, and hence understated rim.  Seemingly no one talks about it, there’s nary a qualitative comparison between it and anything, really.  This is not the CXP33’s fault.  We feel the semi-contemporary phenomenon of the CXP33’s fall from its previous prestigiousness is not a fault in the rim’s core composition of balance, quality, and performance.  We feel that the contemporary field of online “professional” wheel builders, in an effort to be competitive, have to focus their wheel building via a limited selection of rims, usually only two or three at most.  Thus, simple lack of exposure to use and compare the CXP33 to anything else yields this silence.  When researching what the “best” rim is, or what the “best” wheel set is online, in many cases you will find that responses genuinely reflect the limited rim/component catalog of those whom are responding directly to the inquiry.

Please allow us to properly re-introduce the Mavic CXP33 rim.   Mavic’s CXP33 rim can be defined as a modern instrument in compromised precision.  That wasn’t always the case.  Only a few years ago, road rims were stereotypically only 16-19mm tall.  It’s easy to forget how radical a 27mm tall road rim was in 2005.  Taiwan, the predominant epicenter of bicycle component manufacturing for the USA industry at the time, offered less than a handful of different rims that were 27mm tall.  Fast forward to the Present; every rim manufacturer has maybe a dozen or more 27mm+ in their catalog.

Most of Mavic’s rim profiles represent some of the best balances between weight, strength, width, height, etc. anywhere.  Many of Mavic’s profiles have been closely mimicked by more than one rim manufacturer.  The CXP33 was/is one of those optimal balances.  That’s the secret.  It’s not the lightest, tallest, widest, strongest rim in the world.  But it is light weight, very strong, has an aero shape, and extremely precise.  The machined sidewalls, like most of Mavic’s top rims, allow us to true these wheels down to three thousandths or less of an inch.  At this level, oil or dust on the sidewall distorts our perspective.  (Don’t worry, we clean the sidewalls before we work on our wheels.)

The CXP33 isn’t for the weekend cycle star.  Carbons or some factory big stickered wheel set both offer more bling.  CXP33's aren’t for others’ enjoyment, they’re for your enjoyment.  They work, every weekend, every day.  They work extremely well.  If you’re serious about investing long term into quality things, CXP33’s with quality Shimano hubs are your best option.

More info about Shimano 105's

We’ll build these wheels with Shimano 105 5700 series (8/9/10 spd) or 5800 series (8/9/10/11 spd) hub sets, using a three cross lace pattern which offers a great blend between the wheel's ability to accelerate yet still absorb road shock.  We hope you'll love these wheels as much as we do.

  1. Is Qty 1 the price for one wheel or the wheel set?
Qty 1 = 1 wheel set, the price includes the front wheel, the rear wheel, and QR levers if applicable (Ex: QR hubs, Thru Axle hubs do not come with QR levers)
  2. How long does it take to ship once I place my order?
Each wheel set is custom built by us, by hand, and usually takes us 2 - 3 business days after an order is received. Wheel sets with CX-Ray spokes sometimes take an additional 1 - 2 days to ship.
  3. How do I buy extra spokes incase one breaks?
We have yet to make a priority to sell extra spokes. We very rarely, (emphasis on rare) hear of an issue regarding a need to replace a broken spoke. We insist on using the best rims, hubs, spokes, and nipples. Combined with exemplary built wheels, means that they really aren't needed. We are considering making them available for sale however; we are frequently contacted by riders looking for a spoke solution for wheel sets that originally came with their bike.
  4. What else do I need to make these work?
That varies, but in most cases, you will still need to install a rim strip or rim tape, the tire and inner tube(s). You will also need to install your cassette on your rear wheel. We recommend this work to be performed by an experienced / professional bicycle mechanic, specialized tools are needed, and it is recommended that proper bike function is inspected everytime you change bicycle components/wheels.

We do not recommend that said bicycle mechanic "takes a look" at the wheels to "touch them up". Invariably, wheel truing equipment available to bike shops is not capable of indicating tolerance measurements equal to our equipment. Any "touch ups" at the shop level will be greater/and therefor less precise, than the truing adjustments we make when we build your wheels. Visual Cues that a wheel needs "touching up" are frequently misleading, rim seams, rim labels, tires/tubes, even the manner in which a wheel is positioined in a bike frame can all manifest into a visual cue that makes the rim appear out of true. Aside from needing tires, a cassette, etc. your wheels will be ready to ride out of the box.
  5. Why are your wheels so inexpensive?
Simple, low overhead. Our wheel set pricing is not pumped up to pay for expensive team/rider sponsorships, nor huge advertising campaigns. We don't have to recover hundreds of thousands of dollars built into the cost of each wheel set in order to recover from such types of expenses. Repeat customers and word-of-mouth lends to the bulk of our sales. Forum discussions and blogs also contributes heavily.  We frequently receive emails from our customers indicating extreme approval of their new wheels, and the associated savings they enjoyed from making their purchase with Bicycle Wheel Warehouse.
