The DT Swiss XR4.2D disc rims managed to improve upon Mavic's long reigning top tier XC rim from back in the day, the XC717 disc. At about the same rim weight, the DT rim offered slightly more width, and a slightly improved inner rim profile. While slight improvements may not seem exciting, they were improvements over the previous best option. Does that mean then that the XR4.2D is The Best of the Best? Is Airwolf the Raddest 1980's TV attack helicopter starring Jan-Michael Vincent, Ernest Borgnine, and the guy with the eye patch? Absolutely. Not convinced? Look at where they park the thing! What were we Musing about?
Should you buy this wheel set? Entirely your call. Should you watch this short but sweet rock climbing video? Without question
These wheels are built with Pure XCR sealed bearing, quick release, 36 POE, 6 bolt disc hubs that will work with Shimano MTB 8/9/10/11 speed cassettes. The hub shell, axle, and freehub are all aluminum, which makes these hubs very light weight. Given that the freehub is aluminum alloy, we recommend using a decent cassette that has a built in carrier, to prevent/minimize cassette bite. This is a standard tip for any light weight, high end hub that has an aluminum alloy freehub. You can run a 6 or 7 speed cassette on them as well, but you'll need to source a 4.5mm spacer (6 speed), or 4 mm spacer (7 speed) that is compatible with your cassette's function.
These wheels are built with quality DT Swiss Competition double butted black stainless steel spokes with brass nipples in a 32 hole, three cross configuration front and rear. These spokes are a solid upgrade over virtually all "new bike" wheels' spokes.
Overall, these wheels represent a solid XC wheel set option, capable of fast, aggressive driving, I mean riding, and will hold up to moderate impacts. From start to finish, these wheels are top notch, and are an unbeatable deal. We're not joking around here.
