Ever hear the expression, “that person’s famous for being famous”? The Mavic Open Sport rim is popular because it’s popular. It’s a known quantity in a world diluted with over-hyped bicycle rims. The Open Sport doesn’t claim to make you more “aero” because 2mm on a rim profile is really going to make a difference when you’ve got a 12 kt headwind, or offer “noticeably” more comfort because its 2mm wider from the rim’s centerline. The Mavic Open Sport offers an old school box styled rim; and in this case, that’s a good thing. We don’t need to take a bunch of time comparing this rim to another, there’s not too many box styled rims anymore. The few we’ve seen are noodles under tension or have junk sidewall tolerances such that they’re impossible to true under three tenths of a millimeter. In summary, the Open Sport sells itself. This rim works, it’s a great rim without pretension.
We are building these Mavic Open Sport rims up with 32 hole, Shimano Claris 2400 series (8/9/10 spd), laced three cross front and rear, using Wheel Smith silver stainless 1.8mm/15g spokes and brass nipples. This lace pattern offers excellent lateral strength while still allowing each wheel to absorb a fair amount of road vibration. All Shimano hubs feature a loose ball bearing, cup and cone mechanism. The 2400 Claris set weighs in at about 500 - 510g for the hub set. These hubs have an aluminum hub shell, steel axles, and steel freehubs, that will resist cassette bite and hold up for a super long time. The approximate sheel set weight is 2020g.
Thanks for taking a moment to check out these wheels.
