What’s the difference between Bond and Bourne besides Bourne’s obvious preference for hand-to-hand combat over Bond’s impossibly orchestrated sequences of explosive events prior to completely dominating their respective onscreen arch nemesis?  The cars they drive, obviously.  On the one hand, there’s about a 50/50 chance that Bond’s vehicle of choice is an ‘A’ car, (Alfa Romeo, AMC, and or course Aston).  On the other hand, Bourne finds whatever vehicle is in close proximity, and goes all-in.  In the first Bourne movie, it was a seemingly jalopic, presumably original body styled Mini (replicar?) benefiting in performance enhancement from camera zoom shots of the current Mini’s logo embroidered on the steering wheel jacket.  Absolutely no product placement there.

Where are we going with this?  (Always asking the hard questions are you?)  The Mavic A119 rims would be the most likely candidate if Bourne ever had to find a bicycle with some solid wheels to jump on and tear away from the clandestine, alphabet agency agents after a Charlie Fox-Trotted plot twist.  The A119’s quiet aesthetic and demurely stated levels of performance are atypical characteristics that separate this rim’s place amongst Mavic’s road/700c rim catalog.  But just because the Mavic A119 doesn’t scream out the overly used, and abused plethora of road rim adjectives such as, but not limited to, “Team, Aero, Light, Race, anything with an R-S-L (can we buy a vowel Alex?), Training, Technology, Smooth, Depth, Stiff, Pro, Accelerate”, etc.; that doesn’t mean that this rim is void from any or all of the aforementioned benefits of many much more expensive rims and hence wheel sets.

As a matter of fact, what the A119 provides above and beyond almost all other rims out there is a solid, dependable starting place in which to build great performing wheels that last a really long time.  In the modern era of disposable goods, Mavic A119s build into wheels that last.  In this regard, their exceptionalness lies in the fact that their contribution as a component is to build into a solid, finished wheel; something that can’t be isolated or boiled down to a single stat on paper used to make a narrow choice between one “aero” wheel or another.  A choice, consequently, that the outcome is probably more driven by influential marketing messages as compared to real world measurements.

We are building these Mavic A119s with Shimano Claris 2400 silver or black ano 8/9/10 spd hubs, laced three cross front and rear, using DT Swiss stainless steel 2.0mm/14g spokes and brass nipples.  This lace pattern offers excellent lateral strength while still allowing each wheel to absorb a fair amount of road vibration.  Thanks for taking a moment to check out these wheels.
